The piece explores the state of our country by looking at children watching and living it. On the screen we see Teresa May dancing onto stage with the word “opportunity” displayed proudly behind her. The question of “will the children sing?” is asked because the opportunities (creative or otherwise) for young people in our communities are disappearing as funding is restricted. The children from The Sound of Music are shown for a couple of reasons: firstly, as film characters they hold meaning and people have preconceived understandings of these children. They know what to expect from them. They are inherently associated with music, so to ask if they will sing rather than when they will sing is uncomfortable.
