Too much has already been said about leaving the EU, focusing the quantifiables of payments, trade and migration. Too little was ever explained about the real reasons for Brexit. Almost nothing was said about the unquantifiable costs of ceasing to participate in the imperfect but visionary project to unite neighbouring nations while recognising their diversity. Costs to the UK and costs to the remainder of the EU which cannot be denumerated on the side of a bus. My painting, created in a flurry of frustration and dismay in 2016, still expresses the sadness of our separation, of our failed democracy and of our irresponsibility and betrayal in deserting our place at the table when so much is still at stake.
