Why so sad?

Emma Garvie, 40

This photograph tells the tale of my daughter’s disconnection from the world around her.
The child in this image could be anywhere. I set out to make her appear disconnected and unidentifiable. She might be British, she might be eastern European, a refuge, a loner, a reject, an outcast.
The tale underneath is actually a girl who cannot find her place in the world, a girl who is left behind and forgotten. She doesn’t understand the world around her, or the cruelty she faces. She is lonely and confused; disconnected. Who is she really, where has she been and why is she so sad?
