Why do we seek an ideal image that is near impossible to obtain?

In my painting I am making the comparison between the classic arcade claw game to the idea of physical perfection and the ideal image. For example magazines portray glitzy pictures of what is perceived to be the ‘ideal’ appearance to aim for in society despite very few the average person not looking like this ideal. Therefore what we are fed by magazines and the media is a scam much like the claw arcade game as in both the supposed “reward” or “goal” is practically impossible to achieve. So this puts forward the question why do we continue to relentlessly pursue something which is more or less unobtainable and even when it is obtained it isn’t necessarily a rewarding feeling brought with the success.
