Why do we postpone human interaction for social media?

James Rowland, 19

I noticed a stranger one night with his friends; when his friends temporarily entered a shop he did not follow; he looked around a little desperately, before he began to swipe through his phone. I wrote this poem because I saw his loneliness, a shared loneliness I think we all feel when we desperately want to connect; I wanted to express the idea of shared loneliness; that it is meaningful to realise that postponing being with others for instant gratification will not help in the long run.
