I started this essay with an image plucked from memory: a woman lying beside her bike on a busy intersection having just been hit by a bus. I saw this several years before I started writing the essay and wanted to examine the way the mind fills in blanks when memory fails. From this starting point, I allowed myself to follow all of the associative leaps my brain wanted to make while I was writing. This led me to think about colour signifiers, abstract thought and the limitations of spoken and written language. When put together, these ideas brought out what I believe to be the main theme of the essay: why do people need to create art?
