Why do we hoard the past with such wanton abandonment?

My uncle Bob was a big, surly man in a sky-blue RAF boiler suit and I was told by my late auntie that he had been a famous body-builder in his day. Latterly, his caravan was consigned behind the family farm. I think it is nowadays inhabited by bats.
If you take the time to look, there are many such Schrödingers’ tucked behind distant barns.
