Why do people love mysteries?

Patrick Campbell

Short StoryThe Death Of Sherlock Holmes, 2020

My story is a meta-commentary on genre, specifically looking at the mystery and detective genre. By combining the works of Edgar Allen Poe, Agatha Christie, and Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, and having two fictional detective investigate the murder of the definitive model of the detective archetype, I can examine the history and development of the genre, as well as explore the genres and tropes that have been picked up along the way. The message of my story, is to understand why the mystery genre, as well as certain authors and characters within it, have become so incredibly popular in modern culture, and what it is exactly people connect with about the genre on such a personal and fundamental level.
