Why are the Oscars obsessed with the disabled?

Andrew Moodie, 20

My article looks at the portrayal of disabled people in film and how a great many of them lead to an Oscar nomination or win for the actor. It also addresses the fact that non-disabled actors have usually taken on these roles in the past, whereas now it happens more often that characters that have a certain disability are portrayed by someone who has the same condition in real life. The article also looks at recent portrayals of conditions like autism on TV, whether it’s an essential part of the character or just one that displays often-associated personality traits.
