Why and how are names linked to our sense of self?

My entry, written in a minimalist style, recognises the arbitrary nature of the importance we give names from a young age. However, it also displays the powerful connection between one’s name and one’s identity, and the importance of holding onto that connection, especially when one has, for example, been bullied for having an unusual name. It asks how these issues can be even more complex for immigrants and homosexual couples. However, names are a universal human value and something that everybody questions at some point in their lives.
