What is a city without people?
This painting explores the experience of isolation in an urban space. Walking down empty streets during the peak of the pandemic led me to see the city in a new, uncanny way.
The abstract style of this work reflects the surreal experience of moving through a city still lit up but devoid of people. It also carries my melancholy nostalgia for being with people and travelling to visit my family. This work embodies the baseline loneliness and existential despair I feel going through life, that has been exacerbated in the last year, as we have all had to find new ways to feel comfortable alone.
