What’s a pencil worth?

Sophie Florance

This photo was taken in Ethiopia driving from Bahar Dar to Gondar. These children had spotted pencils in the hands of foreigners and ran to receive the treasures. The day before, 14 year olds held pencils in their hands for the first time ever; confused at their purpose. They were filled with gratitude and joy when they were taught the purpose of a pencil. They clasped them close to their chests and walked with pride, machete in their other hand, as they continued working.
