One day, whilst helping Finn with his paper round, Fallon and I began talking about apocalypse scenarios, and what we would do if we were told the world was going to end. Someone – though I couldn’t tell you who – came out with “I’d probably have a lot of sex.” And it got us all thinking. “Etiam” tells two stories – present and future, cause and effect, actions and their dire consequences. All tied together with speeches which articulate the very worst parts of human nature. It explores themes such as relationships, nature vs nurture, youth, chaos and mortality. “Etiam” is more relevant than ever given the current pandemic as it turns a mirror on how society collectively deals with bad situations. Whether it’s a virus or an alleged meteor, we don’t deal with them well.
