What remains when love ends?

Duncan MacInnes, 69

When I experienced two love affairs, which failed in quick succession, I was in a kind of despair, until one day it occurred to me that the wonderful, magical feelings came wholly from within myself, and despite everything it was possible to hold on to that. Recently I’ve heard falling in love described as ‘terrifying’, but it doesn’t have to be so, if somehow you don’t lose that perspective. You can never know what the other takes from a relationship, but you can know how much you’ve learned from them and what you’re left with. And value that. At the end of the day, it’s your movie.
