What makes a city a home?

Johanna Werner, 26

This is a selection from my series ‘My Foreign Home: Edinburgh’. With it, I am collecting stories from people who have come to Edinburgh from a different country and now call this city their home. I myself have come to Edinburgh from Germany in 2014, and Brexit might affect the multicultural atmosphere I appreciate here. Like many of my subjects, I have never felt out of place even though I wasn’t born in this country and I feel this is a big part of Edinburgh’s identity. Each portrait is taken in a place that they particularly enjoy and captioned with a quote from the subject. In times where many people can live and travel where they want, I find it especially interesting to see what makes people stay in a certain city, why they came to it in the first place and what drew them in. Depending on where people are from, they experience the culture and place very differently, so these were things I asked them about.
