While watching news coverage of the increasing infections and deaths of care home residents at the start of the COVID-19 pandemic, I began to think about the priorities of the government and society. Should we invest in today’s youth or protect our elders and their collective wisdom? What happens when we must choose? It is through this lens that Last Rights makes a stark prediction, where individual and governmental interests cross paths in one possible dystopian near future tale. By highlighting the absurdity and offensiveness of such a choice, I hope to stimulate conversation on why the value placed on our young and ageing populations appears to differ so much.
