What is parenthood and how do we approach it?

Valerie O'Neill, 22

As someone who grew up with an abusive stepfather, my own approach to parenthood has been, to say the least, hesitant. But having fallen in love with someone who has children from a previous relationship (and growing to love those children myself), I have been placed in a position I never expected to be in: I am now a step-parent myself. This work illustrates a small glimpse into the internal turmoil so many parents face, step or otherwise: how do we learn to approach our own identity as parents when faced with problematic parental relationships of our own, and how do we learn to process that trauma so as not inflict our children with the same baggage?
