My acrylic piece depicts my Nana, who, after a recent stroke, is unable to speak. What is beautiful to me is the excitement from my Papa when she sang, reminding us that she is still her even if she can’t verbalise it. I painted this portrait and his comment was, ‘You could’ve picked a better picture than that.’ A little disheartening after spending so many hours. He said this because she isn’t posing or smiling or pretending. Upon reflection this is exactly why I chose the image. To me life is about loving the moments and the life in them. It’s about loving someone’s whole being and the excitement when they can give you a glimpse of that. Especially if they couldn’t before.
