Oil PaintWhat If This Present Were the World’s Last Night?, 202122" by 24"

The quotation comes from John Donne (1573-1631), the “coolest” of the Metaphysical Poets. For Donne, his thoughts turned to how he had lived his life and the condition of his soul. But I think the question is especially relevant to our times – the threat of climate change to the world, the threat of Covid to each of our personal lives. What if this present were all there was? It fairly concentrates the mind. Would you cry for the loss of all you have, or smile because all your worries and fears no longer mattered? What is it that really matters to you? Who would you want to be with? Would you say, at last, “I love you” or “I’m sorry”. Things that cost you sleepless nights would be of no account anymore. The £50 someone owed you. The jacket someone kept. What would you do or say to find your personal peace and complete your life – if this present were the world’s last night? Maybe it is time to do or say whatever it is now.
