February is LGBTQ+ History Month here in Scotland, which has spurred me to reflect on my own journey growing up as a gay man in the twenty-first century. We have undeniably come a long way in recent years, but even today, sometimes the mere act of existing feels like an act of resistance.
This is a poem about trying to be proud in a world that wants you gone. It is a poem about self-discovery, of fear, of love, of survival. Above all, it is a reality check, a wake-up call, a call to action. Act Up, 2019 edition. ‘Silence = Death’, and we have so much to live for.
There is a colourful future ahead. I want more of us to get to see it.
