What Constitutes The Concept Of ‘Fine Art’ Materials And ‘Low Art’ Imagery?

Drypoint Etching On Hahnemuhle PaperParty Poopers Act 2 (1), 2021Approximately 24 x 34 inches

This piece was inspired by my frustration at people not taking the COVID-19 pandemic seriously and hosting and/or attending large gatherings unnecessarily and putting themselves and others at risk. Humour is a vital component in my practice, and I take a tongue-in-cheek approach to serious issues without downplaying the horrors and absurdity. Much of my work is inspired by my emotions and experiences, and I depersonalise myself from it by playing with obsessive motifs and characters to avoid the work becoming too obvious or literal. The concept of spreading disease to one another is represented by copious excretion and excrement, and the original title ‘Party Poopers’ reflects this, as well as playing upon being seen as a downer for not wanting to contribute to the spread of COVID-19.
