What can we learn from the ghosts of Scotland’s past?

Ryan Latto, 27

Reverend Robert Kirk’s soul lives inside a tree on Doon Hill in Aberfoyle. His book, The Secret Commonwealth of Elves, Fauns, and Faeries, exposed the inner workings of the faerie realm and thus, Kirk was kidnapped by the faeries never to be seen again. So what can we learn from Kirk’s story? Well, a lot more than you’d think. In this post-truth world I investigate Scottish history, folklore, and stories, by interviewing academics, entertainers, activists, authors, or anyone who has a connection to the story. Unearthed is no stuffy history podcast, this is looking at Scotland’s past to understand what is happening today. After losing my work as a journalist due to Covid, I’ve been working on Uneathed since lockdown began. In this episode I retrace the steps of Robert Kirk to find out about our heritage, our language, our land; and just how close we are to losing our ancient language of Gaelic. In times of great political upheaval, I use music, script, and incredible interviews from across Scotland and beyond. I use my journalism and storytelling as a history tour guide to entertain and understand what it really means to be Scottish.
