What can we do to better support emerging artists?

Sarah Calmus

It can be hard to have a sustainable income, to develop work, to survive in the arts industries. Low incomes, poor studio conditions, compromising creative visions and job-juggling can bend even the strongest of wills. This isn’t everyone’s reality in the creative industries but for many young or emerging creatives it can be.*

My work seeks to create more supportive platforms where folk can share and learn together, creating better opportunities for each other and for the creative community. With this in mind, I programmed, developed and organised a Symposium called ‘Emergence’ for the 2018 Hidden Door Festival, supported by the Hidden Door team. Celebrating 5 years of the festival supporting creatives and in recognition of the Year of Young People, it focused on how can we continue to build more supportive, inclusive environments and platforms for creatives. This fusion of discussions, presentations and intermittent performances was full of honest words of wisdom and passionate verve. The overall message from conversations with Creative Scotland, Garvald Edinburgh, Orla O’Loughlin, Claire Stewart, Jenny Lindsay, and other wonderful folk was; “there is hope, it can be done, there are funds, we can support each other, you are on the right track!
