Were we nothing but lovers apart?

Samantha McPhillips, 18

Through this poem I try to convey the universal experience of unrequited love and heartbreak; in order to make a relationship work there must be equality, but the subject of the poem higlights that some of us put our all in to recieve nothing in return. The same could be said for all kinds of relationships, of blood or of heart and by writing in first person it allows us to follow through the story of accepting that love is broken. It is important as many of us struggle to convey our heartbreak into words and some struggle to feel like they are not alone so by writing this poem, I hope it brings a sense of comfort in knowing that someone understands how you feel or have felt.
