Were “the good old days” any better than today?

Billy Russell, 73

Days End is an oil painting I did, depicting the fag end of the Clyde as a maritime hub. Jobbing mariners could still scratch a living out of the sea. In the foreground, you can see a wee Glesga man mooching about as he hasn’t the price of a pint, and has nothing else to do to pass the time. He is maybe hoping the boys on the Puffer will ask him to catch their mooring warps. Maybe exchange a wee bit of banter whilst ribbing each other at how helpful he had been. Later on he could walk home past the pub with a wee gallus spring in his step, feeling he had achieved something.
