The painting I produced depicts four different mother and child figures from four different cultures; some live in poverty and some do not. The portraits were painted with acrylic paint and I collaged the clothes with newspaper print from the money section so that the viewer can’t judge the sitter’s status based on their clothes. The question to the viewer is ‘Can you tell who lives in poverty?’. There is little difference between the raw human characters who live in poverty and who live in a wealthy culture. They were born into those situations by chance. I could have just as easily been born in a less privileged background and not have been allowed to develop skills that I have. There is no correlation between their personality or character and the lifestyle they have been forced to cope with. When we realise this we start to understand that we are all just human.
