The Danger of Dogma?

Saraphir Camille Legind

SongDogma, 2021

I wrote this song in response to the dogmatic and rigid beliefs you meet in some religious and spiritual movements. I have spent most of my adult life searching for meaning, so I know the searching and feeling of having found ‘the truth’, as well as the feeling of wanting to ‘fix’ this to create the illusion of absolute certainty. Religion or having faith is not a problem for me, the problem arises when you won’t accept any kind of questioning of spiritual teachers or doctrines. The beliefs and teachings can become more important than basic moral values and it can lead to people behaving in ways that are unkind, discriminatory and dangerous to others. Instead of bringing clarity and compassion spirituality can become cloaked in feelings of superiority and judgment, which can be very painful to encounter on a personal level and creates division on a societal level. I hope my song will provoke enough to spark debate around this issue of dogma and help people question and become aware of their own dogmatic ideas. I wrote the word with stones for the cover image to symbolize of the fixed nature of dogma.
