My painting “To see oursels as ithers seen us”, illustrates a moment, initially captured on camera by my daughter, which inspired me to depict myself and my reaction to John Byrne’s portrait of Tilda Swinton, with which l was awestruck!
My daughter gave me the gift of seeing myself as she saw me and in the words of Burns, ‘O, wad some Power the giftie gie us, To see oursels as others see us!
I went from being the voyeur of the portrait to the subject within my daughters capture, which in turn inspired me to immortalise the moment of multiple inspiration in oils.
The initial viewing at the National Portrait Gallery went through different phases resulting in me literally stepping into the painting, a metaphor for an introspective journey where l get to portray myself as others saw me. Possibly a truer representation than that of a selfie type portrait and a true gift indeed!
