Self: concealed in furls of flesh?

Conor Gray

Oil on MDF boardSelf: concealed in furls of flesh, 20224x3 ft

This piece is one in an entire series – a surreal portrait based on introspection and awareness of myself. The veiling of the figure is akin to a cocoon, with some sort of hidden transformation happening underneath. The limbs that can be seen are distorted and inhuman. My motivations during the production of this piece are underpinned by a cycle of self loathing and acceptance of myself, no matter what may be behind the cloth. I have struggled for many years with anxiety and body dysmorphia which has led to me trying to keep myself hidden from the world. This work is in some a testament to that.
