Reflections of Our Past

Ben McMillan

This photograph shows two buildings on Bothwell Street in the heart of the city of Glasgow; one reflected in the other. The modern building is the main subject with its sleek, mirrored, bold strong lines, but it reflects the beauty of the past from the traditional, classical components of the older building. It made me wonder why we rarely build those old structures, honouring tradition and showing a respect for it. Is it simply financial restraints? However, the buildings both reflect the wealth within our society. The modern building houses Students Loans and the older one is an insurance building. These buildings tower over the pedestrians, facing each other, both monuments to wealth and power.
