Distorted, synthesised, compressed, banished, shredded, destroyed, disseminated, appropriated, reproduced, deterritorialised, resisted. From ambitious development to eventual dissolution into meaningless fragments. From being worshipped to being entertained. The life of the ‘poor images’ has always been marked by ups and downs and a fate of constant editing. When I first read Hito Steyerl’s (2009) description of the ‘poor image’, I was strongly aware of its deep association with the work of a group of contemporary figurative artists, including myself.
