Dreams are great for creating a detached sense of mystery between ourselves and imagined characters. Whether the people in our dreams are familiar or not, there is a liminal quality to how we perceive things which makes us surrender control and stops us from jumping to conclusions. This story is the result of an unusual dream from which a fascinating character walked out. I was struck by the character I had imagined and saw the creative potential in using a genderless subject and implementing the ‘they’ pronoun to explore individuality. The ‘they’ pronoun is a liberating tool for discarding assumptions about gender and achieving a more personal narrative. In this story, I explore one question, how close can you really get to another?
