My painting aims to highlight the destruction of woodland and green spaces that takes place in the name of ‘development’. My local woods are rapidly getting smaller to accommodate a housing estate, and this is robbing our small community of a vital amenity. Ireland in 2020 is ravaged by a housing crisis that is forcing the younger generations, myself included, to emigrate in search of affordable education and housing. Cities like Dublin and Cork are completely inaccessible to most of us because the price of living is so high. We need to find a balance where we are providing homes but also protecting the infamous natural landscape that makes Ireland worth returning to.
