A recent NHS Confederation identified that people with a mental health problem are three times more likely to attend A&E, and that people with a mental health problem are almost five times more likely to be an emergency inpatient admission than someone without mental ill health issues. It is with this in mind that I centre my story in a busy A&E department of a hospital, where staff may see the same returning faces. I hope that the short journey that the protagonist embarks upon and the subsequent outcome give food for thought and discussion. Arguably there has been a gap between the rhetoric of Government and the ongoing lack of material support reaching frontline mental health services. Hopefully this will be addressed and delivered in the recent 2020 government budget announcements with regards a cash injection for the NHS.
