Is happiness the illusive creature that we covet only after it has escaped?

Dougie Semple, 69

We recognise pain and sadness in the instant but do we afford happiness the same recognition? Is happiness the illusive creature that we covet only after it has escaped? Between the two emotions, is sadness the stronger but does it dilute with time while past happiness gains in strength? Is the happiness of youth everyone’s most treasured possession and if so – why? Could it be that the great human trick is to push sadness out of the equation? Finally, can happiness and sadness be successfully amalgamated to produce a positive emotion?
