New Zealand Arts writer and critic Andrew Wood recently wrote ‘Art is far too important to take too seriously’. His mantra resonated Very completely (and seriously) with me. I make art which mostly involves kind of throwing textures and colours and stuff together. It’s often a little bit funny (I think) And not terribly serious at all. But, actually, given the chaos and state of the world which, if we are not careful, thinking too much about will drive us to despair, perhaps making art which is uplifting and quirky and funny IS seriously very important (alongside lots of very deep and meaningful art also, obvs).
