How much emotional support should animals provide humans?

Kevin Fullerton, 29

Animals provide an uncritical comfort for people at their lowest ebb, giving them the support they need to move through difficult events in their life. In recent years, the phenomena of support animals has fascinated me, and caused me to worry if using pets as emotional crutches has reached a point of absurdity or, worse, cruelty. In our quest for solace at every juncture, we run the risk of placing animals in situations that cause them distress. The story that’s resulted from this thought process explores this issue via the meltdown of a long-term relationship, and combines the toxicity of a Charles Bukowski story with the surrealism of Daren King or Luis Bunuel.
