How Many Women Have To Suffer Sexual Violence Before Something Changes?

Georgia Eve

The Man, 2022

In 2021 a UN Women survey revealed that 97% of young women had experienced sexual harassment in public. A statistic that marks what can rightfully be described as an epidemic of sexual violence. A statistic that shows we all know someone with a story. But no one seems to know the answer to this problem. ‘The Man’ is a poem which seeks to dismantle some of the commonly proposed solutions. Safety instructions repeated to women again and again. Instructions that only pose to unveil how entrenched rape culture really is. Where do we point the finger when someone lays a finger. Historically, in the case of sexual violence and the subject of women’s safety, the onus seems to fall on women. The question is what are we doing to keep ourselves safe and not what are men doing to make women unsafe. My piece calls for a change in narrative. A call to action. Do we have to reach 100% before things start to change? My work is a war-cry for all the women who are tired of being told to change their behavior, their habits, and their dress. How many women have to suffer before something changes? How many?
