How important are our words?

Bethany Logan, 22

This is a short piece, intended to provoke discussion on our ‘right to free speech’. Sadly too often this right is abused in order to give a voice to bigots, without care for the responsibilities we have to our fellow humankind. Our words are a proven force for change but are too often disregarded, with the act of minding what you say and the words you use having you branded a ‘snowflake’ or ‘too politically correct’ in today’s society. To be consciously aware of the power and effect of your words is to be sensitive and weak, regardless of the hard evidence of the psychological effects of cruel language. It’s incredibly important that as a race we realise that we are all so much better than this.
