My project is a virtual installation which explores the different experiences dancers have when improvising on their own. Improvisation is when you can be the most in-touch with your deepest emotions and have the capability to express them with your whole self.
The personal experience of improvising by yourself let’s you have a greater understanding of who you truly are, without fear of judgment from people watching you.
Four contemporary dance students participated in this work by taking part in interviews; improvising by themselves once a week for 7 weeks with an awareness of their emotional experience; and creating documentation in the form of writing/poem/artwork which reflects what they experienced whilst dancing.
This reflective documentation is displayed as the installation to allow the audience to be immersed in the emotional journeys the dancers experienced whilst improvising. It was essential not to include videos of them dancing as that would focus on movement, rather than their emotions experiences.
I hope this encourages others to improvise and understand that emotion can be released through movement and dance can be used as a coping-mechanism. Allow yourself to be immersed in this experience as you journey through their documentation.
