WrittenHer White Self, 2020

‘Her White Self’ was originally written during the height of the global Black Lives Matter protests. I wanted to write something that showed the importance of unity, and the beauty of contrast – a Black girl and a white girl completely in love with who and what the other person is, and passing that love to the next generation. We should be celebrating our differences, learning from others what the world would have us forget: humans are beings of Love and Connection, and my soul yearns to laugh the same way it did in my childhood, when I knew nothing of the hatred one needs to carry in order to treat those who don’t look like us with so much contempt. This poem is very close to my heart, detailing the relationship between myself and my best friend, a white woman. Throughout our years of friendship, our skin has never divided us. It is this mutual, platonic love that I wish to see in a world that still chooses to discriminate based on one’s ethnic, cultural, or spiritual background.
