My story shares one of the saddest, confusing and heartbreaking experiences of my life – the funeral of my friend who committed suicide. But it also was a moment of comfort, to realise the deep connection I had to my other friend, his wife, and that I could be there to support her through her loss, and that made her happy. In today’s fast paced and busy world, we are often so focused on keeping up that we forget to slow down and appreciate the connections with ourselves and with others. And it seems that it’s only when something tragic happens that we wake up. I don’t know for certain why my friend took his own life, but I think it’s because he was trying so hard to keep up with the expectations he thought others had of him, and he felt he didn’t meet. I wish I could have told him how much everybody loved, respected and appreciated him before it was too late. Dealing with my own anxiety and mental health issues, sometimes it’s hard to know that you are enough. But it certainly helps when someone else takes the time to remind you.
