How do we grow as a family when a loved one develops a chronic illness?

Shirley Kay, 53

How do we grow as a family when a loved one develops a chronic illness? Chronic illness brings multiple challenges for the whole family. The way forward that was once clear and smooth, can become murky and unfamiliar. It may require reassessments and adjustments, or the creation of a completely new path forward in life as a family. Challenges are our most important teachers, that allow us to grow as human and spiritual beings, learning from our new set of circumstances and ascending to a better way of being. Chronic illness can sometimes evoke feelings of being broken or flawed. Mosaics are created from broken fragments, each one unique, often with rough edges and irregular in form. However, if the beauty of each piece is recognised and placed beside another piece that compliments and enhances it, collectively, a beautiful picture is created. We are ALL broken or flawed as human beings, but it is the way that we intertwine like the branches of a tree, supporting and enhancing each other, recognising and celebrating our uniqueness, embracing our flaws, growing and evolving together. Now we can move forward as a family with love.
