Hay’s practice has always encouraged labor-intensive processes combining technology with traditional handmaking techniques to create textile works. Her work explores new ways to translate the human form: rejecting the traditional method of life drawing such as long periods of artist viewing subject. Instead, Hay uses shapes to decide the journey a drawing takes, proposing freedom of expression and creative adventure when drawing the human form. As seen in this piece – And They Touched The Light – explores themes of movement, shape, and expression but poses the form as unidentifiable by opposing the stereotypical social constructs of gender.
