Despite the enormous progress made in the last few decades, representation of Queer people in mainstream media continues to rely on exhausted stereotypes and tropes. LGBTQ+ people are often displayed as types rather than individuals— the hypersexual deviant, the quirky gay best friend, the tragic lovers destined to be miserable. This image is from my project ‘Queer Intimacy’, a collection of photographs of my Queer flatmates taken during lockdown, between March and July 2020. The project strives to display a different side to Queer intimacy, one that isn’t overtly sexual or embroiled in heteronormative tropes. Highlighting the day-to-day actions and shared comraderie of non-sexual Queer relationships, the project explores the notion of Queer fun and play.
