How did the Covid-19 lockdown affect the Edinburgh-based artist?

Jamie O'Donnell, 22

This film features poetry written by myself from my series: “This is My Voice – 1st, 2nd, and 3rd Movement”. These poems are very personal to me as they explore themes around mental health and my trans identity – mental health being particularly prominent due to the pandemic. During the Covid-19 lockdown, it was strange to see the famous landmarks of Edinburgh completely deserted. For this film, I wanted to make it less about myself and more about others. It gives the impression of voices coming together and getting louder – which is important during this pandemic. The most important quote from this film is: “Our streets are silenced, but our voices are still heard”. It shows how we can stay connected through our voices, despite not being able to see each other. By using clips from Edinburgh-based films, it emphasises how important Edinburgh is in the art industry, but now that galleries and theatres have been closed, it has silenced the voices of artists. Lockdown has made artists rethink how they can make and display work (such as livestreams and online exhibitions), therefore staying connected within the art world.
