How can we embrace major changes of identity later in life and heal wounds?

Ashley Mowat, 52

After experiencing a major depressive episode in my fifties, with self-harm, eating disorder and OCD, I had a crisis and struggled to examine and express myself. I discovered a non-binary gender identity that that had been repressed and that this precipitated my crisis. Through an excellent self-harm recovery practitioner I discovered visual arts as a medium, both to express myself and achieve a meditative state during the practice of creating, at times when mental illness restricted my concentration to other activities like reading. My piece here demonstrates the struggle to assert my identity and overcome sustained obstacles brought by depression and negative media representations of my validity and recovery.
