Lewis Carol’s Red Queen tells Alice, “It takes all the running you can to stay in the same place – If you want to get somewhere else, you must run at least twice as fast as that!” Debt is so common now. I know a young person who used credit cards to place horse racing bets to afford to go on holiday so they could relax on a beach. Now they work extra hard just to keep up with the debt that will keep them in the same place for a very long time. I picture them as a horse galloping as hard as they can but not moving forward. A real carousel horse staying still on a carousel spinning against them as fast as they run. Is it clear nowadays that your gambling on a card you can’t run off if you loose? They were caught in a fast moving culture that pushed the idea of climbing a pyramid of success as quickly as possible. Modern life is getting faster and faster but is it also easier and easier to find yourself getting nowhere?
