My body is not a piece of meat or flesh to be consumed. I chose to paint myself nude, exposing the parts of my body that I am most deeply insecure about. By allowing myself to be vulnerable, I invite criticism and challenge myself to be free of the preconceived judgements that others may have about me. Women are encouraged to clutch their keys when walking home alone, phone a friend when a man walks behind them, cover their drinks and cover their body. Why aren’t men encouraged to not treat women like meat? Why is it that 91% of victims of sexual assault and rape are women, and about 99% of perpetrators are men? Women’s bodies should be celebrated for their beauty and diversity, women should not be disadvantaged or fear for their life simply because of the genitals that they were born with, or without.
