Can you reconcile the warring parts of yourself?

Emilie Robson

Flesh/Pica, 2020

A fragmentation happens in female adolescence. A splitting off. Parts of you now exist for human consumption. Parts of you are soft and authentic. Parts of you are a reflective surface in which narcissus can lean in and self-congratulate. Parts of you reflect no light at all. Other parts never see the light of day. If those parts, the unreflecting, unrelenting parts could speak, what language would it be in? If she wanted to step out of the shadows, what colour would her feathers be? And could you call a ceasefire after years of contention? The poem attempts to give voice to the split parts of female identity and allow those fragments to exist separately – and also, coalesce.
